Dana White Says He Has Things Figured Out In Relation To The UFC’s Return On May 9

The UFC is scheduled to be back in action with UFC 249 on May 9, which is going to be headlined by former UFC Interim Lightweight Champion Tony Ferguson and Justin Gaethje facing off for the vacant UFC Interim Lightweight Title.

There was supposed to be a UFC return this weekend that got nixed, but UFC President Dana White says he has things figured out this time around.

“Listen I’m not stopping,” White said on Kevin Harvick’s Sirius XM show (via Damon Martin of MMA Fighting). “I have this thing figured out. The reality is can it be done? Yes, it can be done. It’s just very expensive. It’s very expensive and I’m willing to spend the money to do it.”

While the UFC is set to return on May 9, no location has been revealed for the show at this time, but White did say future events would happen at the UFC Apex and “Fight Island.”

White also believes that sitting around and doing nothing during the coronavirus pandemic is the wrong way to go about things.

“I don’t sit around and wait for somebody to tell me it’s time to do this, it’s time to do that,” White said. “You’ve got to look ahead at what’s happening out there. My commitment is to my employees and to my fighters. I don’t want lay anybody off and I don’t want fighters sitting around for a year not being able to make money but I want everybody to be safe. Instead of hiding from this thing, how do you get out there and figure out how to function yet be safe about it. My biggest problem with this whole thing is misinformation. You read one thing here, you read something different over here. Nobody really knows what’s going on. It’s been a very strange thing to deal with.”

UFC 249 takes place on Saturday, May 9 from a location to be announced with Tony Ferguson and Justin Gaethje headlining. Fightful is providing live coverage of the event, with a post-show podcast to follow.
