Daniel Jacobs has experience competing against the best in the middleweight division and believes he has the skill-set needed to dethrone Canelo Alvarez.
On the first press conference to kick off their three-city press tour to build up hype for their May 4 middleweight unification, Jacobs talked about why he believes he can defeat Alvarez. Jacobs said the combination of his size advantage over Alvarez and his skills will be the reason for him becoming the new unified champion.
?If you understand, boxing styles make fights. You can?t automatically think that because he defeated (Gennady) Golovkin, he?ll beat me. Physically I?m the bigger man. Golovkin was bigger than him and I?m bigger than Golovkin. Rocky (Fielding) was the biggest fighter that Canelo has faced, but he didn?t possess the skill set that I have. So, that?s the difference,? Jacobs said.
This isn't the first middleweight superfight for Jacobs as he too has fought Golovkin back in 2017. Despite losing to Golovkin by a very narrow margin on the scorecards, many believed it would be a matter of time before Jacobs would get back to the biggest stage possible against either Golovkin or Alvarez. When it comes to overcoming obstacles, Jacobs, a former cancer survivor, said beating Alvarez will be the last obstacle before becoming the top man in the 160-pound division.
?I never ever had it easy. I always had the long road, had to jump over hurdle after hurdle after hurdle, and when I step into the ring May 4th, that will be the last hurdle I ever have to step over because I will be declared the unified middleweight champion of the world. We have worked so hard for this moment,? Jacobs said.
The fight, which will unify the WBA "Super," WBC and IBF middleweight titles, between Alvarez and Jacobs will take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on May 4. The card will be streamed on DAZN in the United States.
