Welterweight champion Danny "Swift" Garcia is finally set to return in his hometown of Philadelphia after being absent from the ring since dominating Robert Guerrero over 12 rounds on a PBC boxing card on January 23.
A news conference is currently being planned for next week to announce the bout, which is set to take place on a PBC on Spike telecast. Garcia (32-0, 18 KO) has yet to have an opponent to be named for this fight, however a fighter is expected to be presented in the upcoming days to meet "Swift" at the Liacouras Center on Temple University's campus.
Garcia is familiar with the venue, as he won a 2009 skirmish against Enrique Colon via second round TKO on the undercard of a night featuring the great Bernard Hopkins. The young American, being only 28 years old, continued his dominance from that point on, becoming the unified junior welterweight champion of the world, however he vacated those titles in order to move up to full welterweight last year and won the belt's vacated by Floyd Mayweather in his fight against Guerrero.
It is phenomenal news to see Garcia back on the schedule, as the welterweight division is one of the most heavily loaded in all of boxing. Danny has always been considered one of the most talented boxers on the planet, and Al Haymon, his promoter, has a plethora of talent within his stable to pit against Garcia. Most expect the Philadelphia native to have a showcase fight for his November date, then potentially take on knockout artist Keith Thurman (27-0, 22 KO) early next year to unify each mans welterweight title.
Whether it be against Thurman or other contenders such as Tim Bradley, Amir Khan, or Shawn Porter, Garcia is sure to be a massive task for anyone in this division or the ones directly above and below it. Many have also been hoping to see Garcia challenge up and comer Errol Spence Jr., who just became the mandatory for Kell Brook's junior welterweight title. Brook is expected to move up to junior middleweight after his recent TKO loss to Gennady Golovkin, which would leave Spence fighting for the vacant belt, making it more appealing to get the big fight the young American has been waiting for.
