Months after he suffered his second loss in a world title fight, David Lemieux is already on the comeback trail.
It was announced that Lemieux will face Karim Achour in a scheduled 12-round fight on May 26 at the Videotron Centre in Quebec City, Canada. The fight will be for the WBC Francophone and WBC International middleweight titles. At a press conference announcing the fight, Lemieux said he hopes to show the boxing world that he is still capable of winning a world title.
"I aim very high, so for me every fight is extremely important. On May 26, expect fireworks. I want to pass along a message: The best of me is yet to come," Lemieux said.
Lemieux is coming off a wide unanimous decision loss to WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders last December. It was Lemieux's first loss since losing his IBF middleweight title to Gennady Golovkin in 2015 in Lemieux's United States debut as a pay-per-view headliner. The loss to Golovkin snapped a four-month reign as world champion after defeating Hassan N'Dam to win the then-vacant title. There had been reports that his return was going to fight on the undercard of the May 5 Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin event in Las Vegas before the fight got scrapped.
Achour, a native of France with a 26-4-3 pro record, has not lost a fight since 2013. Achour already fought once in 2018, scoring a unanimous decision win over Patrice Sou Toke back in Feburary to win the aforementioned two WBC regional titles.
