Dominick Cruz is a veritable wizard. You have to give a guy respect that was plagued with injuries, had a highly skilled champion take his place in absence, come back after years and beat that guy on his first fight back to get the Bantamweight title that he never lost. However, this is only a half of Cruz's life in the UFC. During his time healing, Cruz unanimously became one of the best guys in the booth and calling the fights. And it looks like we may be seeing more of that.
In a champions.co exclusive, Dave Rispoli spoke with Cruz about his thoughts on Conor McGregor's rematch with Nate Diaz but also asked him about his commentator duties. "Who says it takes a year?" Cruz responded with a smile when Rispoli asked if he'd take Joe Rogan's spot.
After explaining that Rogan's new contract is up in a year, Cruz said, "That doesn't necessarily mean anything, I mean, If I'm as good at the job as you say I am then I might be able to be in there earlier than that." Cruz said. ":..And would that not make me the first athlete ever to be a color commentator while simultaneously competing in the sport at the highest level? I think that would be correct. Let's watch it happen. History."
That's right. While Cruz is quick on his feet?in more ways than one?it seems like he's thought about this answer given the readiness in which he dropped it. It really sounds like Cruz is wanting to beat fighters in the Octagon, then run back to the booth to critique their techniques which would be totally awesome.
