Eric Gomez: Canelo-GGG 2 "Very Close" To Being Done

The much-anticipated rematch between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin is close to being a done deal.

According to Eric Gomez, president of Golden Boy Promotions, negotiations have progressed well and the fight could become a done deal as soon as this week. Gomez spoke to Boxingscene.com and said he believes the fight will eventually be official.

"We're concentrating on making the rematch. We're very, very close on getting that done. It's just details we're working out and we're going back-and-forth and I think it's going to get done. Our total focus - we're not thinking of anything else - what we want to do is the rematch. That's what we want," Gomez said.

Rematch talks have been going on almost immediately since the first fight ended in a controversial draw on September 16. The WBC, one of the organizations whose middleweight world title belt belong to Golovkin, even ordered a rematch to make sure it would happen. Gomez said if the rematch gets done this week, then an announcement will follow shortly.

"If we can get it done some time this week, we can announce it this week. But we're very, very close. We're concentrated 100-percent on getting all the details done," Gomez said.

As a result of the draw, Golovkin retained his unified WBC, WBA, IBF and IBO middleweight titles while Canelo still holds The Ring and the lineal middleweight titles. The rematch is expected to take place on May 5, but Golovkin's trainer Abel Sanchez told Fightful back in October that the fight would take place either in March or in May.
