The war of words between the camps of Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez continues even as Golovkin was getting ready to fight Vanes Martirosyan.
After recent comments made by Golovkin to Kevin Iole saying that he puts the chances of a rematch between Golovkin and Alvarez at just "10 percent," Eric Gomez, president of Golden Boy Promotions, the company that promotes Alvarez, responded to those comments. Gomez spoke with Michael Woods of Bad Left Hook and said the plan is still to have the much-anticipated rematch between the two middleweight superstars and said if the fight does not happen, then it is Golovkin's fault, claiming the unified middleweight champion is scared of Alvarez.
"No, we want GGG. If it doesn?t get made, it?s not because of us, it?s because of them, and we?ll move on. Probably GGG?s afraid, he?s scared, he knows Canelo is younger, faster, stronger," Gomez said.
The two were supposed to fight on May 5, but Alvarez tested positive for traces of clenbuterol back in February, causing Alvarez to withdraw from the fight and then get dealt a six-month suspension from the Nevada State Athletic Commission. The suspension will end on August 17 and Golden Boy Promotions already has plans to have Alvarez fight on Mexican Independence Day weekend in September.
Golovkin will also have to deal with the IBF in regards to his middleweight title situation. The IBF said Golovkin must fight mandatory challenger Sergiy Derevyanchenko next or risk being stripped of the IBF title, meaning a September fight between Alvarez and Golovkin would not be possible.
