Fightful Boxing Newsletter (10/20): Kubrat Pulev Injury, WBSS, Barclays Center Boxing Card Review

A major change occurred in the main event of the October 28 boxing card in Cardiff, Wales. Kubrat Pulev, who was going to challenge for Anthony Joshua's IBF world heavyweight championship, suffered an injury and is therefore out of the fight. Promoter Eddie Hearn had a contingency plan in Carlos Takam, who will take over Pulev's place. The card is expected to have nearly 80,000 people in attendance, making it the second-largest crowd for a boxing fight in 2017.

This past weekend had numerous major boxing cards take place, including a Showtime boxing card, a FOX card and a World Boxing Super Series card. In total, six world titles were on the line on those three cards. I attended the Showtime card, which took place at the Barclays Center, and it was one of the best boxing cards in 2017, despite a terrible main event that saw fans leave throughout the entire fight.

Kubrat Pulev Injured; Anthony Joshua To Face Carlos Takam on October 28:

With less than two weeks before his upcoming IBF heavyweight title challenge, Kubrat Pulev suffered a shoulder injury that will keep him from fighting Anthony Joshua on October 28.

While not exactly confirming the exact type of injury Pulev suffered, sources did tell Fightful that Pulev is indeed injured. According to the source, Pulev will not be able to recover on time to make the title fight. Multiple reports are saying Pulev got injured during training, but several conflicting reports differ on what type of injury he suffered. Some reports say that he suffered a torn pectoral muscle, some say a chest injury.

Sources also told Fightful that the injury actually occurred sometime last week, but Pulev's camp wanted to keep it a secret until they could confirm, without a shadow of a doubt, that Pulev will not be able to compete. Pulev just recently went to get the injury checked out and that was when it was confirmed that he would not be able to recover on time.

Promoter Eddie Hearn confirmed the news, saying Pulev suffered a shoulder injury and that Carlos Takam, who is the IBF's No. 3 ranked boxer and the current IBF Intercontinental Champion Carlos Takam. Takam has a 35-3-1 (27 KO) record and has won his last two fights.

The October 28 card is set to take place at Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales. The fight already sold more than 70,000 tickets in record time and was poised to break the stadium's boxing attendance record. Joshua's last fight, against Wladimir Klitschko in April, broke the all-time English boxing attendance record when approximately 90,000 people attended the fight at Wembley Stadium. Joshua defeated Klitschko in that fight to become the unified IBF and WBA heavyweight champion.

When Pulev?s injury started making the rounds on social media, there was a lot of worries that the card would get canceled. That thought never crossed Hearn?s mind. After all, the card was set to have an attendance of nearly 80,000 putting it perhaps in the top 25 of the highest attendance for a boxing match in history. The issue with the attendance now being smaller due to Pulev?s injury is an extremely flawed statement. After all, the draw of the fight is Joshua, not the actual matchup he has against Pulev. Pulev neither has the skills to make a fight against Joshua, on paper, a competitive one nor does he have the star power to attract such a large attendance to one of his fights.

The outcry of picking Takam over a Dillian Whyte, who is a far bigger name in boxing than Takam and Pulev combined, is reasonable. After all, he is fighting on the undercard, is highly ranked by the IBF, who would approve of a title fight between Joshua and Whyte and that fight would be a far better fight than Takam or Pulev. Perhaps the thought is that, in order to somewhat appease fans, is to have Whyte on the undercard and give fans a big name to watch in case Joshua easily dismantles Takam in quick fashion, which is a possibility.

That isn?t to say Takam has no shot of beating Joshua. Takam did fight WBO heavyweight champion Joseph Parker last year and that fight was fairly close. Had Takam won the fight against Parker, there was a very real possibility that we may be looking at Takam as the WBO champion and not Parker. At best, Takam has about as much of a shot at beating Joshua as Pulev did, which was very slim, to begin with.

Joshua is the second world heavyweight champion to have his opponent drop out of a title fight with just weeks remaining before the bout. WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder was set to fight Luis Ortiz on November 4 before Ortiz failed a VADA drug test and was pulled out of the fight. Wilder is now fighting WBC mandatory challenger Bermane Stiverne on November 4 since Stiverne was already fighting Dominic Breazeale on the undercard.

The actual betting odds for this fight really does not give Takam any shot of winning. In some places, Joshua opened as a -5000 favorite while Takam was about a +1200 underdog. The odds remain largely the same as of Thursday morning.

The odds shouldn?t a big shocker, but can be a bit misleading. Although Takam did take the fight on short notice, he had been training since about mid-August in case the Joshua vs. Pulev fight fell through. Perhaps this is partially why Hearn was able to book this fight in mere hours after the news broke out when it took days to simply insert Stiverne into his mandatory challenger slot against Wilder.

Although the fight might be off for October 28 and Joshua could be fighting someone else in Wales, Pulev will most likely still remain as the IBF's mandatory challenger, meaning that Pulev is still entitled to an IBF heavyweight championship match. Pulev has been the mandatory challenger for months and this shouldn?t make the IBF outright take away Pulev?s status.

So what does this mean for Joshua?s potential fight against Wilder? Well, in reality, not much has changed. When Hearn laid out the plan for Joshua?s next few fights, it became abundantly clear that Wilder was the end goal, and will remain the end goal. It?s possible that with Ortiz?s status as the WBA?s mandatory challenger now in jeopardy, the fight with Pulev gets rebooked for early 2017 and then have Joshua fight Wilder next summer, should he still have the WBC belt.

But there is also an alternative route. With Joshua fighting a near-top contender from the IBF, it?s possible that Joshua could ask the WBO to put his IBF mandatory challenge on hold in order to set up a unification fight with Parker. It makes sense. Joshua owning the IBF, WBA and WBO titles, a summer 2018 unification fight with Wilder would be the biggest boxing match of 2018, after a potential Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin rematch, currently being planned for May 5, 2018.

Showtime At Barclays Center:

Showtime ran a Championship Boxing card at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, where Showtime has done many big boxing cards as of late. The card was a tripleheader of junior middleweight world championship fights, similar to HBO?s September 9 card that was also a tripleheader of major fights at super flyweight.

The main event, Erislandy Lara vs. Terrell Gausha for the WBA junior middleweight title, was a colossal disappointment that put a major damper on what was easily a top 5 boxing card of 2017 if you were to include the untelevised undercard.

The official attendance for the card was 7,643, which is by far the worst attendance for a Barclays Center boxing card in 2016. The previous 2017 low was 9,118 from the July 29 fight between Mikey Garcia and Adrien Broner. The October 14 card?s attendance could mainly be attributed to one reason: the lack of any major local stars being on top of the card. This sole reason doesn?t tell the whole story, however. After all, the January boxing card at Barclays was headlined by Badou Jack vs. James DeGale, two Europeans with no New York ties. That card did about 2,500 more people.

The television numbers for the fight were equally as perplexing as the attendance numbers. The main event averaged just 399,000 viewers and peaked at 476,000, according to Nielsen Media Research. Both undercard bouts performed better in viewership, however. The co-main event, Jermell Charlo vs. Erickson Lubin, averaged 495,000 viewers, peaking at 537,000, and the opening bout, Jarrett Hurd vs. Austin Trout, averaged 430,000 viewers and peaked at 555,000.

This may sound harsh, but this card proved one point: Lara is unable to be a big draw as the A side in the main event of a major boxing card. The fact that Lara?s fight was the least-viewed fight on the card and that attendance was so abysmal compared to the other Barclays Center cards proved that he can?t draw. The lack of any excitement in his fight, augmented by the sight of thousands of fans leaving the arena during the main event of a world title fight, further proves his point. This isn?t exactly a new discovery. Lara?s fight against Canelo Alvarez drew the second-lowest pay-per-view buyrate in Canelo?s career and it generated the lowest amount of revenue for a Canelo-headlined pay-per-view ($18 million).

Erislandy Lara defeats Terrell Gausha via unanimous decision (116-111, 117-110, 117-110) to retain the WBA junior middleweight title: Ultimately, this was about as bad a main event as you ask for. It?s especially bad when thousands of fans, who were giving standing ovations at a fight 90 minutes prior, were leaving the arena left and right. There is such a thing in boxing as a good one-sided fight. This was not one of them.

Lara?s style is one that has and will win him many fights, but like with Guillermo Rigondeaux, does not translate well to an exciting television product for the masses. It?s a fighting style that amateur standouts from Cuba are all too familiar with and have perfected: slow, methodical and highly technical. Only a fool would not appreciate how talented and skillful Lara is, and to not have him be in the conversation for the best boxer at 154 pounds would be very ignorant. It?s just that Lara is not the type of fighter to follow up on two massive fights beforehand. Not even a knockdown Lara scored early in the fight brought any excitement.

Gausha tried his best to mount some offense, but he does not possess the necessary skills to make Lara sweat. The judges had it much closer than most of us media sitting at ringside. In fact, I was among the most generous members of the media, giving one round to Gausha while several other members of the media that were present at ringside scored the fight 120-107.

The fight drew much negative reception from the fans, where hundreds and even thousands of fans left after every round, leaving the remaining couple of thousand fans from the 7,643 that attended the card to chant "This is boring!" and "This fight sucks!" Fans quickly exited the arena, constantly booing both fighters. They started to take matters into their own hands to bring excitement to the main event by counting down the last 10 seconds of the last few rounds and cheering loudly as each ended.

Jermell Charlo defeats Erickson Lubin via KO, round 1, 2:41, to retain the WBC junior middleweight title: The story of the fight in the ring was the brutal knockout Charlo had at the end of the first round, which sealed the deal. The knockout was very similar to the one Mike Tyson had against Michael Spinks in 1988, still a fantastic knockout to watch today. The issue heading into this fight was Lubin was way too inexperienced, too young and was given a world title fight too soon into his career.

Skeptics will feel validated since Lubin got knocked out in less than three minutes, but this can?t possibly have answered the question of Lubin?s readiness to be in this type of fight. It was a surprise knockout and not one that we saw coming. It?s possible that Lubin could have won the title as well, but we?ll never know. Lubin was very humble in his post-fight interview and said that he will bounce back. I expect him to do so. He?s only 22 years old, so he has all the time in the world to further build up his resume, get more experience and challenge for a world title sometime in the future.

The story of the fight outside of the ring was a chair being thrown seconds after Charlo scored the knockout. The chair was thrown from Charlo?s corner and it barely hit the canvas, but it was unlikely that the perpetrator was not from Charlo?s team. As soon as the person threw the chair, he quickly ran from the building with about a dozen security guards running after him. That chase started maybe about 10 feet from where I was sitting at ringside and all of us at press row were perplexed, baffled by what has transpired. Some of us were still processing Charlo?s knockout and all of a sudden chaos outside of the ring put all at Barclays Center in a state of utter shock and awe.

Jarrett Hurd defeats Austin Trout via TKO, round 10, 3:00 to retain the IBF junior middleweight title: I had joked to my Fightful colleagues that, if I were Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (and let?s face it, this whole newsletter was Meltzer-inspired, so there?s your six degrees of separation), I would have given this fight 4.75 stars out of 5. Wrestling fans will understand this joke.

Wrestling jokes aside, this fight was as good as anyone can hope for. It was non-stop action from the first bell and a strong case can be made that the sixth round of the fight is a "Round of the Year" candidate. Trout spent the majority of the first four rounds outworking Hurd. Despite this, Trout never really hurt Hurd while Hurd seemed to make an impact almost every time he lands a power punch.

Both men endured punishment. Trout's right eye swelled during the fight and at the end, it was almost completely shut. Hurd suffered a cut above his left eye and then had to deal with a deeper cut late in the fight. At some points, Hurd's face was covered entirely in blood due to the cut.

The fans gave both men a standing ovation and the two boxers then had to be transported to a hospital for precautionary measures. So far, neither fighter has been seriously hurt.

PBC On FOX Doubleheader:

Before the Showtime boxing card went on the air, FOX aired a featherweight world title doubleheader, headlined by WBA ?super? featherweight champion Leo Santa Cruz fighting Chris Avalos and the co-main event was WBA ?regular? champion Abner Mares vs. Andres Gutierrez.

According to ratings released earlier in the week by Nielsen Media Research, an average audience of 1,483,000 watched the world title doubleheader The show?s viewership numbers were very good for a PBC on FOX card, but when compared to the rest of the big 4 networks on that night, FOX was the clear loser. While the viewership may not look great on the surface, it still is a step up from most boxing broadcasts.

Viewership for the previous ?PBC on FOX? tripleheader peaked at 1,039,000 viewers and averaged 886,000. The card had to deal with multiple major college football games as well as the MLB NLCS between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs. If anything, this should be encouraging numbers for PBC and for FOX. While these numbers still pale in comparison to the usual viewership numbers for UFC broadcasts on the network, boxing has been shown to be on the rise, with multiple cards having millions of viewers, eclipsing some UFC shows in the process.

As for the in-ring action, these two fights were essentially tune-up fights to help prep Santa Cruz and Mares for their upcoming rematch, expected to take place sometime in early 2018. Both champions looked well in this fight, but weren?t tremendously exciting. They both stopped their opponents, so that is a plus and the fights weren?t boring, but weren?t as exciting as the Hurd vs. Trout fight. With the proper build and marketing, these two on a FOX card could do big numbers, somewhere in the 1.75 to 2 million range in terms of viewership.

Fans that have already seen the first fight between Santa Cruz and Mares (Santa Cruz won that fight) should know what to expect between these two. The fight will be a solid featherweight match, but Santa Cruz should fare as the favorite. He has been impressive since his 2016 loss against Carl Frampton.

Abner Mares defeated Andres Gutierrez to retain the WBA "Regular" World Featherweight Title via TD and Leo Santa Cruz defeated Chris Avalos to retain the WBA "Super" World Featherweight Title: KO, Round 8: I watched both of these fights during the Barclays Center undercard alongside other media members at press row and we all came to the same conclusion numerous times throughout the night: We can?t get excited over this card and neither champion is trying their hardest to give people something to look forward to the eventual WBA unification.

To reiterate, the fights weren?t bad. Mares and Santa Cruz did a lot of damage early on in the fight and after a few rounds, it became a smart and systematic breakdown of their respective opponents. There were no knockouts or anything that would seriously get a non-boxing fan wanting to watch these two fight, but it didn?t deter interest either.

World Boxing Super Series Up To This Point:

Over the weekend, the top-seed in the World Boxing Super Series? super middleweight tournament, George Groves, proved he was the best boxer at 168 pounds after a vicious knockout win over Jamie Cox.

The win sets Groves up with Chris Eubank Jr., the tournament?s IBO champion, in the semifinals. This would be the biggest fight in Groves? career since he was knocked out by fellow Briton Carl Froch in front of 80,000 fans at Wembley Stadium in 2014.

In terms of excitement and star power, Groves vs. Eubank Jr. is the biggest fight of all the semi-final matches for both tournaments. Groves finally became a world champion earlier this year, capping a career-long journey to win a world title, becoming British boxing?s next successful underdog story.

Eubank Jr. is slowly making his case as the best super middleweight boxer. His star is augmented by the fact that his father, Hall of Fame candidate Chris Eubank, is one of the most popular British sports figures of the past few decades. The fight figures to take place in England sometime in January. Save for perhaps Wembley Stadium, Groves vs. Eubank Jr. is almost a guaranteed sellout in the region.

George Groves defeated Jamie Cox to retain the WBA ?super? super middleweight title, KO, round 4: Groves began the fight landing hard right hands, but Cox was almost just as aggressive in the second round. The fight was a good slugfest for as short as it was, but it ended with a massive right hand to Cox?s stomach that sent him to the canvas, unable to get right back up. The cleaner and more accurate punches came from Groves and Cox's aggression were abruptly curtailed with him doubled up in pain with his knees on the canvas after being hit by Groves' body shot.

The next WBSS card will take place on October 21 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. The main event is Murat Gassiev defending his IBF cruiserweight title against Krzysztof Wlodarczyk in the last World Boxing Super Series cruiserweight quarterfinal match.

The story of this matchup is youth and potential (Gassiev) vs. years of experience (Wlodarczyk). Gassiev is the world champion, but has yet to defend it and is only 24 years old. Wlodarczyk, on the other hand, is more than a decade older than Gassiev and is a former two-time world champion.

I attended the media workout in Hoboken, New Jersey, where several of the top boxers were in attendance, including Ringstar Sports promoter Richard Schaeffer. The media workout itself wasn?t very interesting, or at least not more interesting than any of the media workouts I?ve attended in the past. The chats I had with several of the fighters did provide some fascinating insight into what they think of their opponents and the cruiserweight division?s popularity in the sport.

When speaking to Wlodarczyk, there was an air of strong confidence within the Polish boxer. Wlodarczyk does not believe he is the underdog and does not think Gassiev is even good enough to hold the world title. Wlodarczyk reference Gassiev?s title win earlier this year, a split decision win over Denis Lebedev and said Gassiev barely had to scrape by Lebedev just to win a world title.

On the other side, Gassiev is dealing with the expectations set for him by many in the community. Gassiev is trained by Abel Sanchez, who also trains unified middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin and with that connection, members of the media have been asking Sanchez about Gassiev being the next Golovkin.

On the undercard is a WBSS cruiserweight reserve fight between Stivens Bujaj and Mateusz Masternak. While these two don?t possess the same level of skill as Gassiev and Wlodarczyk, Bujaj and Masternak are still quality cruiserweights, possessing a combined pro record of 55-5-1.

Finally, the last major fight on the undercard is a WBC junior middleweight title eliminator semifinal match between Jack Culcay and Maciej Sulecki. The winner of this fight would then be ordered to fight Vanes Martirosyan in a final eliminator match.

This is Sulecki?s first major fight and told me this was ?the biggest fight of his career.? Sulecki is undefeated, but hasn?t had a chance to shine on a big stage or fight for a title. Culcay, on the other hand, is coming off a close loss to Demetrius Andrade with the WBA junior middleweight title on the line.

The card is not a bad one, but it further highlights the issue with these World Boxing Super Series events in the United States: there simply isn?t that big of a focus on getting the tournament into the United States, at least for this first round of matches. They had one American boxer compete in this tournament and he isn?t even on this card. There?s no featured fighter on this card that wasn?t born in the United States. Although New Jersey has a good population of Polish and Russians, which comprise the main event, the general American population isn?t too intrigued by the tournament.

The super middleweight and cruiserweight division have been dominated by Europeans and they haven?t been featured too heavily in the United States, especially the cruiserweights. The hope with this card is that the cruiserweights attract enough attention from the American audience. The fighters are also hopeful that they can get some new fans at the end of the tournament.

There?s not many names to draw in crowds. We?ll find out on Saturday whether or not the tournament?s name alone could get a large enough crowd to the Prudential Center. For as bad as the attendance at the Barclays Center this past weekend was, I doubt the Prudential Center card will have a much higher attendance figure, if at all. It also doesn?t help that no major television network has stepped to make a serious bid to broadcast any of the first round matches. The Audience Network has been broadcasting the past few fights, and will broadcast this fight, but that won?t cut it if the goal is to make the United States pay attention to the tournament.

Aside from the lack of big noise in the United States, the tournament has actually been a big success thus far. So far, no injuries to any of the main boxers have occurred and all the fights either have had an exciting knockout or a slugfest. In terms of fight quality, all the fights have ranged from decent to great.

With the World Boxing Super Series finals still more than a half year away, tournament officials have already announced the cruiserweight tournament finals' location.

The announcement came as part of an overall effort to increase boxing's presence in the country.

"This is fantastic news, not just for World Boxing Super Series but for boxing and for the sport in Saudi Arabia," Dalmiglio said. "We have seen huge and growing interest in the World Boxing Super Series from fight fans, broadcasters, commercial partners and venue owners from the major boxing markets around the world. The competition to host the cruiserweight final has been fierce, and we are delighted to be able to announce the winner. I am sure that Saudi Arabia will lay on a fitting finale to the first year of the WBSS and first award of the Muhammad Ali Trophy. We are proud to be working with the Saudi General Sports Authority on what will undoubtedly be one of the highlights of the 2018 sporting calendar in Jeddah."

No announcement as to what the super middleweight finals? location will be, but it is expected to headline its own card and take place in May as well.

1. Former super middleweight world champion Mikkel Kessler has delayed his comeback due to a tick bite.

The Danish boxer has been struck down by Lyme disease -- a bacterial infection spread to humans by infected ticks -- and has been forced to pull out of a planned ring return at the at the Messecenter in Herning, Denmark, on November 11.

Four-time world champion Kessler, who has not fought since losing a rematch with England's Carl Froch in a world title unification fight in May 2013, now hopes to fight again in March. Kessler fell ill in training camp and hospital tests revealed he has Lyme Borreliosis. After being released from the hospital, Kessler is now on antibiotics and is yet to resume training.

"I started to feel ill around four weeks ago," Kessler said. "I was tired, my muscles were aching and I was unable to train. At that point, I still had no idea what was causing it. I had blood tests, which showed nothing, and it wasn't until I had a spinal fluid test that the doctors were able to identify the problem. I'm not sure exactly when or where I was bitten by the tick, but I'm just thankful the bacteria was caught early and hopefully there will be no long-lasting effects. Obviously, I'm disappointed to have to delay my comeback. I want to thank my fans for their support and patience. I hope to be ready to return to the ring early next year."

2. Main Events announced that it has signed Bronx, New York junior middleweight Ismael Villarreal, the 20-year-old son of former welterweight journeyman Otilio Villarreal, who lost to opponents such as Zab Judah, Hector Camacho Sr. and Kermit Cintron during his 1992 to 2003 career. Ismael Villarreal, who is trained by his father and managed by Jose Santiago, was 66-7 as an amateur, including winning two New York Golden Gloves championships.

Villarreal?s pro debut is slated to take place November 25 at the Theater at Madison Square Garden on the undercard of the fight between former unified light heavyweight titlist Sergey Kovalev and Vyacheslav Shabranskyy.

3. The Contender boxing reality series, which aired from 2005 to 2008 with the initial season on NBC, followed by two on ESPN and a fourth on Versus, could be returning, this time to Epix, multiple sources with knowledge of the talks told ESPN. Epix did top-level boxing from 2011 to 2013 and showed interest in getting back into it in recent months.

It nearly closed a deal to air the World Boxing Super Series tournaments but ultimately bowed out, but the network still has an appetite for the sport, sources said. If Epix officially signs off on bringing the Contender back, pre-production could start as soon as next month with the new season to air in 2018.

MGM, which owns Epix, also is part owner of Contender co-creator and reality TV superstar producer Mark Burnett?s studio. However, there are also those at Epix, according to sources, advocating for the money that would be spent for a season of the show ? in the $25 million neighborhood -- to instead go to buying significant fights. That kind of annual boxing budget would compete with HBO and Showtime.

4. Tevin Farmer and Kenichi Ogawa will fight for the vacant IBF junior lightweight world title after their promoters made a deal this past week and avoided a purse bid scheduled for October 24.

The IBF sent a letter to its registered promoters, formally canceling the purse bid because "both sides have reached an agreement to do the fight." Farmer versus Ogawa will air on HBO either on December 9 or December 16 at a location to be determined. One possible venue is Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

The fight is due to be on the undercard of another WBC junior lightweight world title fight in the process of being finalized, between titlist Miguel Berchelt and Mexican countryman and former titlist Orlando Salido.

Farmer and Ogawa are due to meet for the 130-pound belt that became vacant when Gervonta Davis was overweight the day before an August 26 defense against Francisco Fonseca on the Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor undercard. Davis was stripped of the title.

5. Luis Nery has made his next ring return official. The WBC bantamweight world champion will reappear on Saturday, November 4, at the Gasmart Stadium in Tijuana, to fight in a 10-round "non-title" bout against dangerous Filipino "King" Arthur Villanueva in the main event that will be broadcast by Azteca 7, and internationally by Bein Sports.

Nery captured the world championship by traveling over to Japan and blasting out Japanese boxing legend Shinsuke Yamanaka in August. Following his big win, it was revealed that Nery had failed a post-fight drug test.

The WBC explained that it has been notified by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association that traces of Zilpaterol were found in Nery?s system. The substance is very similar to Clenbuterol and is used to increase the size of cattle. Nery and his team have claimed it was likely due to contaminated meat. The WBC has yet to make a ruling on Nery's status as world champion.
