Following the win, Makhachev spoke to Fightful's James Lynch about training with UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.

"All my life, I'm training with Khabib. Training hard, training smart. Now everybody understand."

In a separate interview, Nurmagomedov stated Islman could be "three or four fights" away from being the number one contender. When asked about fighting again this year, Makhachev was open to the possibility of fighting at least one more time before the calendar turns to 2019.

Speaking to other media members, Makhachev said he was "very happy" with his submission win over Johnson.

"I watched Kajan's last four fights. I had a plan. My coach told me pressure him and cut angles. When you have moment, get the takedown, and do your job."

The 26-year-old has now won four straight bouts in the lightweight division.
