The date is set for the biggest boxing fight of the year, but as far as a venue is concerned, Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin does not yet have a home.
The September 16 mega fight does not have a fight site, but Golden Boy Promotions president Eric Gomez told ESPN that there are a number of different venues that have expressed interest in hosting the fight.
Some sites that want to showcase boxing’s most anticipated fight of 2017 include AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles and Madison Square Garden in New York. A source has told Fightful that among the candidates, T-Mobile Arena and AT&T Stadium are the favorites to hold the fight.
T-Mobile Arena was the site of the recent Canelo Alvarez vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. bout back on May 6 and it was on that venue where Canelo’s fight with Golovkin was made official. AT&T Stadium also has history with Canelo, being the site of his WBO junior middleweight win over Liam Smith on September 17, 2016.
While Golovkin has never fought at Dodger Stadium, he does have plenty of experience fighting in California. Golovkin recorded wins over Dominic Wade, Willie Monroe Jr. and Marco Antonio Rubio in California. Golovkin fought at Madison Square Garden back in March when he beat Daniel Jacobs via unanimous decision.
Golovkin is defending The Ring, the WBA "super", WBC, IBF, IBO and the vacant lineal middleweight titles will be on the line in the September mega fight. There is no timetable for when the fight venue will be decided.
