Former UFC Heavyweight Champion Fabricio Werdum competed at UFC 249, suffering a split decision loss to Aleksei Oleinik.

A defeated Werdum interacted with Ronaldo Souza, who was diagnosed with the coronavirus during UFC 249 fight week, but says wearing PPE is what made things safe.

“I wasn’t expecting that ‘Jacare’ thing, but ‘Jacare’ took all the precautions, was wearing a mask and gloves, and so was I,” Werdum told MMA Fighting. “I only took the mask off to talk to him a little bit, I was taking the mask off and putting it back on.”

Werdum claims that he was wearing PPE while interacting with Souza, but the video showing their interaction showed Werdum wearing no such things.

Another thing the former heavyweight champion says is that the UFC made things safe for everybody who was participating at UFC 249.

“The UFC was very careful,” Werdum said. “The UFC was really well prepared for this event. It’s impressive. They were checking our temperature every day, I had to do several exams. I got tested for coronavirus three times since I got there.”

Souza is one of two UFC fighters to test positive for the coronavirus, with the other being Lyman Good, who got the virus well before UFC 249.
