Some sad news in the world of boxing as Felipe Orucuta is currently hospitalized.
The WBC announced that Orucuta, a two-time world title challenger, is hospitalized in Uruapan, Mexico after it was revealed that he has a blood clot in his brain. Orucuta is currently in a medically induced coma, but no further information was revealed. Below is the WBC's statement on the situation.
"The World Boxing Council has been in communication with the family of Felipe ?Gallito? Orucuta, with the fight supervisor, Dr. Jose Luis Ibarra, as well as with the medical doctors of the Hospital in Uruapan.
Surgery was performed to remove a blood clot in the brain, which was successful, and Felipe will be in a medically induced coma. There will be no additional information during the following 48 hours during the process of evaluating his evolution.
The boxing community joins in praying for the recovery of our beloved Mexican boxer."
Orucuta fought on June 7, being stopped by Jonathan Javier Rodriguez with the WBC FECOMBOX super flyweight title on the line. Orucuta was badly hurt at the end of the fight, receiving multiple power punches to the face and was not able to defend at all against Rodriguez's combinations. When the fight was stopped, Orucuta dropped to the canvas and was attended to by medical personnel and later taken to a hospital.
This was Orucuta's second straight loss with the first one taking place last September on HBO, dropping a 12-round decision to current WBC super flyweight champion Juan Francisco Estrada. The 33-year-old Orucuta has a 36-6 pro record and challenged for the WBO super flyweight title twice in 2013 and 2014, losing both fights against Omar Narvaez by decision.
