Despite Floyd Mayweather not having a stoppage win in six years, he made good on his promise to beat Conor McGregor in less than 12 rounds, but Mayweather admitted it actually took longer than expected.
On the post-Mayweather vs. McGregor press conference, Mayweather said he followed the game plan he and his team created for fighting the UFC Lightweight champion, but said he and his father thought Mayweather could have won in six or seven rounds.
"We had a gameplan and our gameplan was to take our time, let him shoot his heavy shots and keep walking him down, keep walking him down, do heavy shots to his body, shoot big shots upstairs. My dad said he thought it would end earlier, the seventh or the sixth round. It took us a little longer than expected but we did what we said we were going to do. I promised you guys this fight was not going the distance," Mayweather said.
Mayweather ended up stopping McGregor in the 10th round of their August 26 clash in Las Vegas after the referee decided to call the fight due to McGregor taking too much punishment from Mayweather. That was Mayweather's first stoppage win since knocking out Victor Ortiz all the way back in 2011. Before the Ortiz win, Mayweather's prior stoppage win came in 2007 against Ricky Hatton.
