Antonio Margarito, the former welterweight world champion who had been retired for several years, is due to make a return to the ring later this year.
Margarito will fight Carson Jones in a scheduled 10-round junior middleweight fight that will take place in Chihuahua, Mexico. That fight will be televised in the United States on beIN Sports Español on September 2.
Jones is a 54-fight veteran, winning 40 fights. Jones has never challenged for a world title, but has fought numerous boxers who would end up become world titleholders, such as Kell Brook and Jesus Soto Karass. Jones has won his last three fights and five of his last six.
Throughout his 23-year career, Margarito has won the WBA, WBO and IBF welterweight titles. Margarito has fought the likes Miguel Cotto, Paul Williams, Joshua Clottey, Shane Mosley and Manny Pacquiao. Margarito retired back in 2012 due to the terrible condition his right eye was after years of repeated punishment. Margarito's last fight before retiring was against Cotto, who broke Margarito's orbital bone during the fight.
He came back from retirement last year, defeating Jorge Paez Jr. and Ramon Alvarez, winning the then-vacant WBO-NABO junior middleweight title in the process. The September 2 fight will be Margarito's first fight in 13 months.
