Frankie Edgar is a former UFC Lightweight Champion and has also challenged for the UFC Featherweight Title in his career. However, Edgar never held an interim championship in the UFC, despite competing for one at UFC 200 in a losing effort to Jose Aldo. Edgar, who hasn?t competed since defeating Jeremy Stephens at UFC 205, isn?t a fan of the interim championships.
?I just think they?re getting silly with these interim titles,? Edgar said on The MMA Hour. ?It?s a little too much. They?re already taking Conor?s 55 one away. I just don?t get it.?
Edgar has competed as both a lightweight and as a featherweight in the UFC, but a move to bantamweight isn't out of the question. While the former UFC Lightweight Champion is considering a drop to 135 pounds, he has a provision that would have to be met.
?If they offered me a title shot, I wouldn?t be able to turn it down,? said Edgar. ?But I?m not gonna go down there and fight a contender fight and do that, not while I?m as close as I am, I believe still, at 145. Especially since we don?t know what?s gonna happen. I don?t want to leave yet and sh*t gets figured out and I?m sitting here fighting in a 135-pound contender fight when I could have been fighting for a 145-pound title.?
Edgar only has one fight left on his UFC contract, and has been with the promotion for just over a decade.
