Gennady Golovkin is on a quest to be the sole world champion at 160 pounds, but some, like Freddie Roach, feel like he should actually move up in weight.
Roach, who is most widely known today for being Manny Pacquiao's trainer, told Fighthype.com that Golovkin should move up to 175 pounds in order to get an opportunity to fight better opponents and be a bigger star.
“I still think Triple G is pound-for-pound the best fighter in the world,” Roach said. “Everyone says he hasn’t fought anybody and so forth. The thing is he’s beaten everyone that’s there. There’s not a lot of competition in that weight division right now. I think he might have to go up to 175 to get more recognition."
Golovkin has been adamant about winning all the world titles in the middleweight division. He currently holds all but two world titles: The WBA "regular" middleweight title, which Daniel Jacobs holds and the WBO middleweight title, which is held by Billy Joe Saunders. Only after winning all the titles, then he'll focus his attention on a potential bout with Canelo Alvarez, who has agreed to hold off on negotiations for a fight until the second half of 2017.
Golovkin right now is in talks to have a WBA middleweight title unification with Jacobs. Golovkin is the WBA "super" middleweight champion and both sides have said that a fight between the two would not happen until early 2017 at least.
