Gennady Golovkin Signs With DAZN, Plans To Fight Next In June

Former middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin has a new broadcast home.

Golovkin has officially signed a six-fight deal with DAZN that will see Golovkin fight twice a year on the streaming service. As far as his next fight is concerned, Golovkin plans to return to the ring in June against an opponent to be named at a later date.

The 36-year-old Golovkin now joins a loaded middleweight roster on DAZN that includes unified champion Canelo Alvarez, WBO champion Demetrius Andrade and IBF champion Daniel Jacobs.

In a press release sent to Fightful, Golovkin stated that the streaming platform's visions are what Golovkin was looking for as he is preparing for his eventual retirement and start a second career as a promoter. In addition to Golovkin fighting on DAZN, GGG Promotions will present two cards per year on the platform beginning in 2020.

“DAZN has quickly become the new home of boxing by making the biggest events easily available to the fans,” said Golovkin. “When deciding on where I wanted to continue my career, DAZN’s global vision perfectly matched my goals – not just for my career but the opportunity to showcase talented Eastern European fighters to the world. Thank you to my fans for all of the loyal support and I look forward to you joining me on DAZN.”

No opponent has been named for Golovkin's return but he is currently the No. 1 middleweight in the WBA, WBC and WBO rankings. Golovkin had been the biggest broadcast free agent for months in boxing after Alvarez signed with DAZN last year.

Prior to DAZN, Golovkin spent years fighting on HBO with his last fight being a majority decision loss to Alvarez last September on pay-per-view. Golovkin headlined four pay-per-view events on HBO with two of them doing more than a million buys.
