When the World Boxing Super Series semifinals were announced, perhaps no fight attracted a bigger audience than George Groves vs. Chris Eubank Jr. When it was all said and done, the fight up being a modern-day All-British boxing classic.
Groves defeated Eubank Jr. in the World Boxing Super Series super middleweight semifinals by unanimous decision (117-112, 116-112, 115-113) to advance to the first ever WBSS super middleweight finals. Not only did Groves pick up a finals berth, but also unified the WBA “super” and IBO 168-pound titles.
Both men started the fight well, but it was Groves who drew first blood, creating a cut near Groves’ right eye that left his upper body covered in blood after just three rounds. The fight continued with both men landing several hard shots thanks to Groves’ reach and Eubank’s heavy punches.
The bout truly became an action-packed one starting in the eighth round. Groves continued tagging Eubank, but Eubank tried to close distance and throw wild left hooks hoping to knock out the WBA champion. The fight ended with the two boxers looking like they went through a war, blood covering both men’s bodies.
With such a hard-fought and physically grueling battle, it’s impossible to say both men escaped the fight unscathed. Groves perhaps received the most amount of damage as he suffered a shoulder injury towards the end of the fight. Although no official diagnosis has been made, it is feared that Groves may have dislocated his shoulder, putting his participation in the World Boxing Super Series finals in jeopardy. Groves is scheduled to fight the winner of next week’s semifinal bout between Callum Smith and Juergen Braehmer. The 168-pound finals is currently scheduled to take place at London’s O2 Arena on June 2.
