Gilberto Ramirez cruised to a decision win over Roamer Alexis Angulo to defend his WBO super middleweight title in what was ultimately an uneventful fight.
The fight, which headlined a Top Rank Boxing on ESPN card from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma saw Ramirez successfully retain his title for the fourth time with a wide unanimous decision (119-109, 120-108, 119-109).
In front of 5,241 attendees, Ramirez easily dominated Angulo, utilizing his jab to establish dominance. Angulo did manage to land a couple of clean shots to rock Ramirez, but those moments were few and far in between. After the fight, Ramirez said he wasn?t too thrilled with his performance on ESPN.
?No, I am not happy. I tried to do better," Ramirez said. "I want to go back to training with my team, and we need to keep working, working because I want to be a pound-for-pound fighter. (Angulo) was undefeated. He came in really hungry to come for my belt.?
The win was Ramirez?s third world title defense in the past nine months. Ramirez is currently biding his time before the rest of the champions at super middleweight are free to fight in a unification bout.
The televised portion of the ESPN card opened up with a bloody seven rounds between Alex Saucedo and Lenny Zappavigna. The fight ended when Zappavigna?s corner decided to step in during the seventh round and stop the fight. Zappavigna suffered a horrendous cut during the fight and bled profusely throughout the last few rounds of the fight. The co-feature bout saw Robson Conceicao stop Gavino Guaman in three rounds.
