Despite only serving in the role of President Pro Tem for a little over a month, the Huntington Beach City Council has begun the process to remove former UFC champion Tito Ortiz from the role via a vote of no-confidence.
Ortiz has been a lightning rod for controversy during his brief tenure on city council, with activities ranging from leading curfew breaking protests, and refusing to wear masks while at city council meetings.
Included in the statement by the other council members is a passage of "The Ethics of Speaking One's Mind" from the Institute For Local Government that reads.
"Being a public servant may constrain your activities in many ways, including the open expression of personal views. Having the right to engage in an activity doesn't mean exercising that right is necessarily the best court of action"
The city of Huntington Beach has a unique governmental structure that involves rotating mayors from within the members of the city council. As President Pro Tem, Ortiz was in position to become the mayor in 2022, after the current term rotated out. Under this proceeding, Ortiz would remain in his role as city councilor, but be stripped of his President Pro Tem status, and would no longer be in line to become mayor.
