Ever since it was announced that Jesus Cuellar and Abner Mares would finally meet, Cuellar has been salivating at the opportunity to fight him.
Cuellar spoke at a news conference earlier this week promoting the fight and called the bout against Mares on December 10 the most important fight of his career.
"This is the most important fight of my career as Mares is one of the best in this loaded featherweight division," Cuellar said. "We had to wait very long for this fight to happen, but everything happens for a reason and I'm grateful that the time is almost here. I know that this fight will be a war.
Cuellar has been training with legendary trainer Freddie Roach for the upcoming fight. That fight will main event a Showtime televised card with two world title fights taking place on December 10.
"I've been working hard with [trainer] Freddie Roach, and I'm excited to show what I've learned and [to] get my frustration of waiting off my chest," Cuellar said. "I am more motivated than ever to keep my title and prove who is the best in the division."
The 29-year-old boxer is defending his WBA (regular) featherweight title against Mares. Mares is a former three-weight world titleholder and is coming off a loss to Leo Santa Cruz with the WBA (super) featherweight title on the line in August 2015.
