John Fury, the father of undefeated lineal heavyweight champion, Tyson Fury, has a clear preference for who he wants his son to fight against next.
The elder Fury spoke with the guys on the White & Jordan show on the talkSPORT YouTube channel and said the only fight to make next for Tyson is an undisputed title unification bout against new IBF, WBA, WBO, and IBO heavyweight champion, Oleksandr Usyk. He also made it clear that a potential matchup with former interim WBC heavyweight champion, Dillian Whyte, would not be a fight his son would get excited about.
“He’s gotta go for Usyk or nothing is my idea,” Fury told talkSPORT (h/t MMA Fighting). “It’s Usyk next or nothing. I wouldn’t bother with the rest of ‘em...they’re not in Tyson’s class. Would Dillian Whyte deal with Deontay Wilder? No. So why do you want to put him in there with my son and get him knocked out? At the end of it, [Whyte] just got knocked out by a 42-year-old [Povetkin]. Tyson can’t get up for them kind of fights. He wouldn’t be able to raise his game for that fight, it’s not big enough. And he goes in there with a lackluster attitude, then you don’t see the best of Tyson. You only see the best of Tyson when he’s up against the best, a challenge like he had, and you’ve seen a great fight. For me, I’ve told him Usyk or don’t bother.”
Fury is coming off an eleventh-round knockout in his trilogy bout with former WBC heavyweight champion, Deontay Wilder, this past Saturday night. Usyk meanwhile just defeated Anthony Joshua via a unanimous decision to become a two-division world champion.
