Jon Jones Arrested On DWI And Gun Charges

Jon Jones' problems aren't going away.

Jon Jones was arrested Thursday morning, when Albuquerque police say they responded to reports of gunfire around 1 AM. When they arrived, UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones was there in a parked 2019 Jeep with the engine running.

Jones allegedly failed a field sobriety test after he appeared intoxicated and smelled of alcohol. He would also register over twice the legal limit when taking a breathalyzer. Police then say they found a black handgun, and a half empty bottle of Recuerdo tequila, though he denied firing the weapon. He said that he'd been driving earlier and intended to drive again.

Altogether, Jones was charged with aggravated DWI, negligent use of a firearm, possession of an open container, and driving with no proof of insurance according to MMA Fighting.

?As part of the investigation into this incident, our Gun Violence Reduction Unit will test the firearm and bullet casing to determine whether the gun has been used in any crimes. Reducing gun violence in Albuquerque is our top priority," said Gilbert Gallegos, communications director for the Albuquerque PD said in a statement to MMA Fighting.

Jones was booked into jail before being released. He has a bond arraignment court date set for April 9, and just got off probation in January for allegedly slapping a woman's vagina at a strip club.

The virtually unbeaten champion is no stranger to issues. He pled guilty to DUI after wrecking his Bentley into a pole in New York in 2012, which led to a six-month suspended license and a fine.

He was forced to vacate the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship after a hit-and-run incident in 2015, which landed him a guilty plea and 18 months of supervised probation. He's also been the subject of numerous failed drug tests throughout his UFC career, though there is some fogginess around those.
