MMA

Flyweight contender Joseph Benavidez has suffered an injury and is off of UFC Fight Night 110, where he was scheduled to fight Ben Nguyen.

Benavidez made the announcement himself via Twitter:

UFC superstars who love soccer and their favourite clubs

The injured flyweight didn’t name what kind of injury caused him to be pulled from the event and he didn’t give a timetable for his return either.

Replacing Benavidez against Ben Nguyen is Tim Elliott.

Nguyen (15-6-0) has won three of four fights in the UFC, with those wins coming over Geane Herrera, Ryan Benoit and Alptekin Ozkilic. Nguyen is a former Nitro MMA Flyweight Champion, the fighter defeated Reece McClaren to win the gold. Nguyen started off his professional MMA career in the Fury Fights promotion, winning three of four there.

Elliott (14-7-1) was the winner of the UFC Ultimate Fighter 24 and he went on to challenge UFC Flyweight Champion Demetrious Johnson in a losing effort at the UFC Ultimate Fighter 24 Finale. Elliott is also a former Titan Fighting Championships Flyweight Champion, defeating Iliarde Santos to win the gold at Titan FC 34. Elliott is actually winless on “Fight Night” events, having dropped a bout to Zach Makovsky by unanimous decision at UFC Fight Night 60.

UFC Fight Night 110 takes place on Saturday, June 10 from the Vector Arena in Auckland, New Zealand with Derrick Lewis and Mark Hunt headlining. Fightful is providing live coverage of the event, which airs live on Fox Sports 1.
