Josh Warrington continues to impress the boxing world with a resounding victory over former world champion Carl Frampton.
In the main event of a boxing card in Manchester that was streamed on ESPN+ in the United States, Warrington retained his IBF featherweight title with a unanimous decision victory (116-113, 116-112, 116-112).
The two British featherweights engaged in a war throughout 12 rounds with Warrington threw a high volume of punches at a rapid pace while Frampton tried to outbox him at times. The two boxers traded big shots in the first round and they would continue to do as such for the first half of the fight.
Warrington would get the better of the exchanges, tagging Frampton and even briefly hurting on a couple of occasions. Frampton would slow down the pace of the fight starting in the middle rounds, opting for a more technical fight and had some success. But Warrington would remain relentless in trying to be the aggressor and Frampton was unable to catch up.
Since losing his WBA ?super? featherweight title to Leo Santa Cruz in January 2017, Frampton looked to get back to becoming a full world champion. Frampton won the interim WBO featherweight title by defeating Nonito Donaire in April and then later defending his title against Luke Jackson. The 31-year-old was hoping to win the IBF title in order to chase a unification fight in 2019, either against Santa Cruz or against WBO champion Oscar Valdez.
Selby concludes a banner year that saw him win the IBF title over Lee Selby at Elland Road in Warrington?s hometown of Leeds, England back in May. The win over Frampton improves Warrington?s record to 28-0.
