If there were any doubts of Juan Francisco Estrada not giving an entertaining fight on HBO’s “SuperFly 3” despite it not being his rematch against Srisaket Sor Rungvisai, then Estrada erased those doubts with an impressive win against a tough opponent.
Estrada defeated fellow Mexican Felipe Orucuta by unanimous decision in the main event by scores of 118-110, 117-111 and 117-111, securing his first win since that February loss to Sor Rungvisai.
The fight was expected to be a one-sided fight in favor of Estrada, who started off the fight landing the more effective punches. But around the fifth round, Orucuta started to land cleaner shots and looked to be the aggressor.
Both fighters traded shots in the later rounds of the fight with fans in attendance at The Forum being witness to a more competitive fight than previously expected.
Estrada closed out the last couple of rounds by hurting Orucuta with lead and counter hooks to Orucuta’s head. Estrada finished the fight strong, giving one last push to win in the scorecards for sure.
The win put Estrada back on track for a rematch against Sor Rungvisai. The two fought in the main event of the second “SuperFly” card back in February, with Sor Rungvisai retaining his title by majority decision.
In the televised opener, Kazuto Ioka, coming off a relatively brief retirement, made quick work of WBC Silver super flyweight champion McWilliams Arroyo. Ioka won the fight by unanimous decision (99-90, 97-92, 97-92)
Ioka was impressive from the very start of the fight, easily outlanding Arroyo as Ioka looked to be at ease making his 115-pound debut. Ioka dropped Arroyo in the third round and then quickly moved to try and get a stoppage. Although Ioka did not get the stoppage, the three-division world champion immediately became a super flyweight contender with the win over Arroyo.
Arroyo’s momentum gained from defeating Carlos Cuadras back in February has been stopped. Arroyo was ranked highly in the WBC rankings and will now have to work his way back up in order to get a world title shot.
