It took less than a year into her pro career for Irish boxing star Katie Taylor to win her first pro boxing world title, but Taylor won't be resting for too long.
Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn held a press conference in Ireland to announce that Taylor will headline a Sky Sports-televised card on December 15 in Taylor's first world title defense.
?The plan is to unify the division in Ireland in the spring. She's huge here in Ireland and although the plan is to grow the Katie Taylor brand all over the world, ultimately, we need to return here and we need to have a big fight,? Hearn said.
Taylor defeated former champion Anahi Esther Sanchez on October 28 to win the WBA Female lightweight title. That fight was on the undercard of the Anthony Joshua vs. Carlos Takam fight in Cardiff Wales, which ultimately drew 78,000 people to attend.
Taylor is one of the most accomplished female amateur boxers in recent memory. Taylor is a five-time AIBA World Champion, six-time European amateur champion and won an Olympic gold medal in the 2012 Olympics in the lightweight division. Taylor turned pro shortly after the 2016 Olympics. Taylor won all six of her matches before getting the world title opportunity.
Details of the card, including Taylor's opponent and the venue, will be announced in the near future. As for the potential unification fight in 2018, the other three world champions at boxing's female lightweight division are Delfine Persoon (WBC), Victoria Noelia Bustos (IBF) and Yohana Belén Alfonzo (WBA).
