Katie Taylor continued her run as the unified WBA and IBF women’s lightweight champion with a shutout performance against Cindy Serrano.
In the co-main event of the October 20 Matchroom Boxing USA card in Boston, Taylor won a unanimous decision against Serrano, winning all 10 rounds on all three judges scorecards (100-90, 100-90, 100-90).
Taylor’s right hand proved to be too much for Serrano, a former super featherweight world champion. Serrano never really got a chance to let her hands go, staying stagnant throughout most of the fight. At times, Serrano would pace around the ring, but was unable to connect anything that would hurt Taylor. Late in the fight, Taylor stunned Serrano with a series of right hands and left hooks to the body and further pressured the Puerto Rican challenger to the ropes.
Even after the fight, Taylor said she was surprised Serrano did not put up a bigger fight. Serrano, the sister of six-time world champion Amanda Serrano, has not fought since October 2017.
“She really wasn’t doing very much at all. I was very very surprised. I had a lot of respect for Cindy coming into this fight and I thought she was going to give everything she has," Taylor said.
This was Taylor's second fight as the unified women's lightweight champion. Taylor first won the WBA world title last year in her seventh pro fight and then unified the WBA and IBF titles this past April with a unanimous decision win over Victoria Noelia Bustos.
