Katie Taylor Retains Unified Women's Titles With Shutout Win On Canelo vs. Rocky Undercard

Katie Taylor is continuing her unbeaten run as the unified women's lightweight champion with another dominant performance over another world champion.

On the undercard of Canelo Alvarez vs. Rocky Fielding, Taylor defeated WBC super featherweight champion Eva Wahlstrom by unanimous decision (100-90, 100-90, 100-90) and retained her WBA and IBF lightweight titles. Fightful had also scored the bout in favor of Taylor 100-90.

Taylor was aggressive throughout the entire fight, landing the hook to both the body and to the side of Wahlstrom's head. An accidental clash of heads caused a cut at the top of Wahlstrom's head late in the fight and Wahlstrom still tried to match Taylor in power and in volume, but was unsuccessful in either. The ninth and 10th rounds, however, saw both women continuously exchange punches that had the crowd at Madison Square Garden on its feet for the two women.

With the victory, Taylor is now officially on the path to a potential women's boxing superfight against six-division champion Amanda Serrano. Serrano signed a three-fight deal with DAZN with the hopes of having Taylor and Serrano fight towards the end of 2019.

It was Taylor's fifth world title defense after winning the WBA title in October 2017 and it was Taylor's third win as the unified world champion.
