Gennady Golovkin's win against Kell Brook was another impressive performance by the middleweight champion, but it wasn't Golovkin that ended the fight, Brook's corner that threw in the towel.
The stoppage came in the fifth round after Golovkin pummeled Brook -- who was making his middleweight debut -- throughout the entire fight. In an interview with Sky Sports after the fight, Brook revealed that his right eye got hit badly and defended his trainer's decision in throwing the towel.
"I came back after the second round and said 'I can't see out of the right eye, Dominic'," Brook said. "I was talking to him, and he knows me, he saw me growing up as a kid. He's like a father figure. It was the right decision and I can fight another day. I was getting caught, and getting caught. It could have ended up seriously bad."
Despite the loss, Brook said that he was proud to be able to produce an exciting fight in the near-hive rounds that were contested in their September 10 bout.
"As much as the loss has been gutting and upsetting, I'm excited and happy the fans have seen a great battle against a great fighter, a throwback fighter,” Brook said.
As for "GGG," the middleweight champion has been ordered to fight fellow WBA middleweight champion Daniel Jacobs within the next four months. Jacobs also retained his title against Sergio Mora on September 9. Brook's promoter, Eddie Hearn, did say that Brook might come back next spring. He is the 147 pound champion and his mandatory challenger is Errol Spence Jr.
