Knockout CP Freshmart, one of Thailand's top athletes, once again cruised to another successful WBA minimumweight title defense.
Freshmart defeated mandatory challenger Toto Landero by unanimous decision (119-110, 115-113, 117-111) to retain the WBA title in Freshmart's fourth world title defense.
The first few rounds of the fight went without a problem for Freshmart. Landero, fighting in Thailand for the first time in his professional career, managed to land a strong left hand to Freshmart, which eventually caused a cut near Freshmart's left eye. Despite the cut, Freshmart was able to utilize the jab to punish Landero throughout the rest of the round.
Freshmart, real name Thammanoon ?Knockout CP Freshmart? Niyomtrong, has dominated the minimumweight division since his career started in 2012 when he won the WBC Youth world minimumweight title in his debut fight. Freshmart won the interim WBA minimumweight title when he defeated Carlos Buitrago in 2014 and became the full world champion with a decision win over Byron Rojas in 2016. This was Freshmart's first win of 2018 with his last win being against Rey Loreto last summer. Freshmart is one of two Thai world champions at minimumweight, with the other being WBC champion Wenhang Menayothin, who is one win away from tying Floyd Mayweather's 50-0 pro boxing record.
Landero, a former WBC Eurasia Pacific Boxing Council minimumweight champion, got the world title fight after winning his last two fights, both of which took place in 2017.
