Manager Says Chris Weidman vs. Yoel Romero II Was Nearly Set For UFC 250

Yoel Romero and Chris Weidman met for the first time at UFC 205 in November of 2016, with Romero picking up a third round knockout victory.

Malki Kawa is Romero’s manager and he says that Romero was offered a second chance to battle Weidman at UFC 250, which has since been postponed due to the coronavirus.

“They actually offered us Weidman for this next fight, but Yoel has an orbital eye injury, and I was waiting to see if I could get him cleared to fight May 9, and they canceled the event,” Kawa said on Instagram Live (via Steven Marrocco of MMA Fighting).

Weidman had reportedly been seen to headline another postponed event in UFC Fight Night Oklahoma City, with his opponent on that card being Jack Hermansson.

Kawa says that he’ll fight Weidman or other opponents at light heavyweight, but Romero would rather stay at middleweight.

”He might fight Weidman at 205, or anybody at 205 depending on how much time we have to get prepared,” Kawa said. “If not, he’s going to fight mostly at 185.”

The UFC could be back in action in approximately one month, as the promotion is building a “Fight Island,” which could be home to a potential Romero vs. Weidman II encounter.
