Former world champion Marcos Maidana is looking to end his retirement and restart his career with Premier Boxing Champions.
First reported by Boxing Talk, Maidana will make a comeback and Mike Coppinger later reported by saying that Maidana has signed a deal to fight for PBC. This would end a five-year retirement for Maidana, who last fought in 2014 when he lost to Floyd Mayweather in a rematch on pay-per-view.
According to Coppinger, Maidana signed a multi-fight deal with PBC with the Argentine boxer set to make $1.5 million in his return fight and then a minimum of $3 million in his second bout, which is going to be against a "name opponent." Maidana is expected to eventually return to welterweight, where he once held the WBA world title, and a potential rematch against Adrien Broner could happen down the line. Maidana defeated Broner in 2013 by unanimous decision to win the WBA welterweight title and hand Broner his first pro loss.
The 35-year-old Maidana ended his career in 2014 on a two-fight losing streak, both losses to Mayweather. The first bout between the two boxers saw Mayweather win by majority decision, prompting a rematch later in the year. Mayweather won the second bout by unanimous decision.
Maidana sports a 35-5 career record as a pro with 31 of those wins coming by knockout. Maidana has also won a world title at junior welterweight and has fought several world champions throughout his career, including Mayweather, Broner, Amir Khan and Erik Morales.
