Miguel Cotto To Fight In The Fall

Former world champion Miguel Cotto will fight in the fall, according to Michael Yormark, president and chief of branding and strategy for Roc Nation on a media teleconference on July 12.

The details of Cotto?s (40-5, KOs) return, including the date, location and opponent, have yet to be determined.

"We are hoping to have Miguel back in the ring before the end of the year," Yormark said. "We're working on that now. We're hopeful to have some kind of an announcement over the next couple of weeks."

A possible opponent for Cotto could be former four-division titleholder Juan Manuel Marquez (56-7-1, 40 KOs), who is probably best known for his four fight rivalry against Manny Pacquiao.

It would make sense for the two to fight against each other, using the legendary Mexico-Puerto Rico rivalry as the basis to sell the fight on. It should be noted that Marquez has not fought since May 2014 in a win against Mike Alvarado.

According to reports, the two sides have been talking about a possible fight, but negotiations have hit a roadblock, primarily because Cotto does not want to fight at below 150 lbs. Marquez, according to those same reports, wants to fight Cotto at the welterweight limit of 147 lbs.

The 35-year-old Puerto Rican hasn?t fought since he lost a decision to Canelo Alvarez for the middleweight world title back in Nov. 21, 2016. He is the only Puerto Rican to have won a world title in four different weight classes and has had a career resurgence since famed trainer Freddie Roach started training him in 2013, having beating Sergio Martinez for the middleweight world title in 2014.
