Nathan Cleverly Announces His Retirement Hours After Losing Title On Mayweather vs. McGregor Card

Hours after losing his light heavyweight world title, Nathan Cleverly announced his retirement from boxing.

The news hit when Cleverly posted a photo on social media with the following statement, which can be read below.

"Well done to the new champ Badou Jack. Thank you for the opportunity to fight on this event. Also, a massive shout out to those that have supported me over the years. I've lived it and loved every second of this sport. A few too many miles on the clock. Time to say goodbye. Thank you and goodbye boxing."

Cleverly fought on the Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor pay-per-view card and lost his WBA "regular" light heavyweight title to Badou Jack. Cleverly got stopped in the fifth round of the fight, losing the title in his first defense.

Cleverly won the title last year when he beat Juergen Braehmer after Braehmer suffered an injury halfway through the fight. That was Cleverly's last world title win in three years up to that point. Cleverly also enjoyed a reign as the WBO light heavyweight champion that went from 2010-13.

The 30-year-old Cleverly retires with a 30-4 record, having started his professional career in 2005. Aside from the two world title reigns, Cleverly has also won regional and Intercontinental light heavyweight championships.
