Kalle Sauerland: Plan Is To Have The Three WBSS Finals In September, October And November

Kalle Sauerland reveals his plans for when the World Boxing Super Series finals could take place.

Sauerland spoke to Seconds Out to discuss that very matter and if any tournament finals would be clumped together for a doubleheader. Before discussing what’s next for the WBSS finals, Sauerland did take a little bit of time to talk about what had happened just minutes prior to the interview and that is the way the WBSS cruiserweight semifinal bout between Mairis Briedis and Krzysztof Glowacki, which saw a number of bizarre moments that ultimately led to Briedis knocking out Glowacki.

“Yes, it was a mistake, but both guys were landing leather after the bell. They got to box until the referee says stop and the referee clearly didn’t hear the bell,” Sauerland said.

Assuming the results of the Briedis vs. Glowacki fight stays the same, the plan would be to have the finals for all three tournaments (bantamweight, junior welterweight and cruiserweight) take place in three consecutive months. Unlike the quarterfinals and semifinals of this current WBSS season, where two tournament bouts took place on one card, Sauerland said all three remaining fights will headline their own show.

“September, October, November is the plan. Three weights, three months, no doubleheaders for the finals and they will lead their own events. [The location is] wherever the world is possible,” Sauerland said.

The three finals, which will all be streamed on DAZN, are the following:

  • Naoya Inoue vs. Nonito Donaire: Bantamweight finals for the WBA and IBF world titles
  • Regis Prograis vs. Josh Taylor: Junior welterweight finals for the WBA and IBF world titles
  • Mairis Briedis vs. Yuniel Dorticos: Cruiserweight finals for the WBO and IBF world titles
