Ryan Burnett vs. Nonito Donaire Headlines November WBSS Doubleheader In Scotland

The World Boxing Super Series is heading back to the United Kingdom.

The global boxing tournament will have a fight card taking place at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow, Scotland on November 3 and have a fight from the 118 and 140-pound tournaments. In the main event, WBA “super” champion Ryan Burnett defends his title against four-division world champion Nonito Donaire in a WBSS bantamweight tournament quarterfinal matchup.

This will be the second WBA title defense for Burnett, the tournament’s top seeded boxer. Burnett was briefly a unified champion in the division but relinquished the IBF title after electing not to fight his mandatory challenger. The title has since then been claimed by Emmanuel Rodriguez, who is also fighting in the tournament.

Donaire, one of the tournament’s surprise entrants, is moving down from featherweight all the way back to bantamweight, where he was a former world champion. Donaire is the WBSS’s most experienced and successful boxer among the bantamweights, but is coming off a loss to current interim WBO featherweight champion Carl Frampton back in April.

The co-main event will feature another British boxer. Josh Taylor, the WBC Silver junior welterweight champion will defend his title against Ryan Martin.

Taylor won the Silver title with a unanimous decision win over former world champion Viktor Postol, cementing himself as the mandatory challenger to the WBC title being held by Jose Ramirez. As Ramirez elected to not fight in the tournament, Taylor will have to wait a long time, at least until the end of the WBSS, before getting his shot at the WBC title.

Martin last fought on the untelevised portion of the Gennady Golovkin vs. Vanes Martirosyan card from this past May, scoring a unanimous decision victory over Briedis Prescott. This will be the first fight in the United Kingdom for the 25-year-old Martin, who sports a 22-0 pro record.
