Oscar De La Hoya: Canelo-GGG 2 To Take Place Next May In Las Vegas

Oscar De La Hoya gave an update on the possible rematch between Canelo Avarez and Gennady Golovkin, saying the fight will likely take place in May 2018.

De La Hoya spoke to Fighthub.com and said the rematch will likely take place on May 5, 2018, which is also Cinco De Mayo, a Mexican holiday where Canelo has fought numerous on numerous occasions.

"We're waiting on doing it for Cinco De Mayo next year in Las Vegas. Same place, T-Mobile Arena, but that fight is definitely going to happen. It's a big fight, it's going to be huge. If people didn't see the first fight, wait until the second fight, it's going to be huge," De La Hoya said.

May 5 was the target date from the moment rematch talks started. Golovkin's trainer Abel Sanchez spoke to Fightful in October and said the rematch will either take place in March or in May with no tune-up fights for either man. The T-Mobile Arena was one of two venues being seriously explored for the rematch, with the other being AT&T Stadium, home of the NFL's Dallas Cowboys. Other venues such as Dodgers Stadium and Madison Square Garden were also considered.

Canelo and Golovkin fought to a split draw on September 16, meaning that Golovkin retained his WBA, WBC and IBF middleweight titles and Canelo retained The Ring magazine middleweight title. Fightful had scored the fight a 114-114 draw. The WBC recently ordered Canelo and Golovkin to have a rematch during its annual convention.

No official announcement has been made. De La Hoya's comments can be seen in the video above.
