Oscar De La Hoya has stated he would love to potentially get a fight between unified middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez and welterweight titleholder Errol Spence Jr. possible.
Spence recently said in an interview that he would be okay with moving up two weight classes to fight Alvarez and De La Hoya, Alvarez's promoter caught wind of the welterweight champion's comments. De La Hoya spoke to ESPN and said he wouldn't mind looking to see if such a fight can be made.
"I am letting you know that we love the fight as well and I?ve always said that Errol Spence is one of the most talented fighters out there. There?s no reason why Spence can?t move up to middleweight if Mikey Garcia could go up (from lightweight) to welterweight to fight Spence. And if Spence fights Canelo, it will be the most money Errol Spence will ever make. I would love to start the ball rolling. Let?s do it. We just want to get Canelo the best fights and the toughest challenges out there," De La Hoya said.
Alvarez recently unified the WBA "Super," WBC and IBF 160-pound titles when he defeated Daniel Jacobs on May 4. After Alvarez won the fight, De La Hoya would go on to list a few names that could be in contention to be the Mexican star's next opponent with no specific date being mentioned during the post-fight press conference.
While Spence would be moving up two weight classes for a potential fight against Alvarez, it wouldn't be the first time Spence had been involved in such a fight, except that he was on the other end of that bout. Back in March, Spence defended his IBF welterweight title against then-WBC lightweight champion Mikey Garcia, who was moving up two divisions for the fight.
Such a fight would more than likely not happen anytime soon as Spence is nearing a deal with WBC champion Shawn Porter for a unification bout later this year.
