Patricio Pitbull To Vacate Lightweight Title If He Wins It At Bellator 221

Bellator MMA Featherweight Champion Patricio Pitbull is challenging Michael Chandler for the lightweight gold in the main event of Bellator 221.

Pitbull could leave Bellator 221 with two belts around his waist, but he doesn’t plan on holding both pieces of gold for long.

”The only difference is that those guys moved up to have the belt. I don’t want the belt, I want Michael Chandler’s head,” Pitbull said to MMA Fighting. “I want a win over him. His belt is not my goal. His belt will be the consequence of my win. My goal is to beat him up, make him feel pain.”

The featherweight champion has moved up to lightweight before, but suffered a loss to former UFC Lightweight Champion Ben Henderson in that appearance.

One thing Pitbull solidly believes is that the time is now for him to move up and fight Chandler for the strap.

”The best moment is right now,” Pitbull said. “I’m the champion, I cleaned my division, and he’s the lightweight champion again. It’s the perfect moment (to make this fight) because of the rivalry and because now it’s a superfight between champions.”

Bellator 221 takes place on Saturday, May 11 from the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois with Michael Chandler and Patricio Pitbull headlining. Fightful is providing live coverage of the event, which streams live on DAZN.
