Former world champion Paulie Malignaggi has announced his retirement from the sport of boxing.
Malignaggi announced on Twitter his retirement 19 years after Malignaggi competed in his very first amateur boxing fight.
Malignaggi retires with a 36-8 record professional. His last fight was a knockout loss to Sam Eggington for the WBC International welterweight title. He has not fought for a major world title since a fourth-round stoppage loss to Shawn Porter in 2014 for the IBF welterweight title.
The 36-year-old has held the IBF light welterweight title from 2007-08 and the WBA welterweight title from 2012-13.
He has fought the likes Danny Garcia, Zab Judah, Adrien Broner, Ricky Hatton, Miguel Cotto and Amir Khan. In the past few years, Malignaggi has been very involved in the sport as a broadcaster. He is a staple on Showtime's Championship Boxing broadcast team alongside WWE announcer Mauro Ranallo. He has also appeared numerous times on Sky Sports' boxing broadcasts in the United Kingdom.
"I'm looking forward to a long, fruitful career now behind the mic, staying around the sport I love so much and the sport that changed my life for the better," Malignaggi said. "Thank you to the sport of boxing, and thank you to everyone who supported me along the way on this incredible journey. I am forever grateful."
