Fernando Beltran, the promoter for WBO junior middleweight world champion Jaime Munguia, said the young Mexican champion will defend his title in Mexico.
Beltran stated that Munguia will defend his title at Arena Monterrey on April 13, though no opponent was mentioned. Munguia would likely not defend his title against mandatory challenger Dennis Hogan, as Beltran stated that the plan would be for Munguia to fight Hogan in the second half of the year.
Munguia is coming off his third main event in the United States on January 26 when he defeated Takeshi Inoue by unanimous decision to retain his WBO title. The fight headlined a Golden Boy Promotions card from the Toyota Center in Houston on DAZN.
The 22-year-old Munguia has held the WBO title since beating Sadam Ali in May 2018. Munguia has made three successful title defenses, with all of them being either as television main events or on pay-per-view cards. After his fight against Inoue, Munguia said he wanted to make a couple of title defenses at 154 pounds before moving up in weight to challenge for a middleweight world title. Beltran added that he hopes that Munguia fights in September on the undercard of a potential boxing card headlined by unified middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez.
