Donald Cerrone said he was a little bit dead inside when Robbie Lawler pulled out of their highly anticipated bout for UFC 205, but now “Cowboy” must come alive again as he could have a new opponent for the much anticipated event.
UFC Ultimate Fighter champion Kelvin Gastelum has agreed to step in and fight Cerrone at the event, it’s placement on the card has yet to be announced.
Gastelum was already booked to face Jorge Masvidal in a welterweight bout at UFC Fight Night 98, but obviously, that fight will now be pulled from the card. Masvidal should remain on the card with a new opponent, but nothing has been announced as of this writing.
Cerrone has been undefeated since moving up a weight class to the welterweight division, with notable wins coming over both Rick Story and Patrick Cote, the submission win over Cote was the first time that Cote had ever been submitted as a pro.
Gastelum last competed at UFC 200, where he defeated former UFC Welterweight Champion Johny Hendricks by unanimous decision.
As for Robbie Lawler, the fighter has not competed since losing the welterweight title to Tyron Woodley at UFC 201, his next bout is not expected to be announced for some time. According to Cerrone, Lawler is taking off additional time after being knocked out by Tyron Woodley in July at UFC 201.
UFC 205 takes place on Saturday, November 12th from Madison Square Garden in New York, New York, but no headlining fight has been announced as of now.
