Cannonier had previously fought as a heavyweight in the UFC, defeating Cyril Asker and suffering a defeat to Shawn Jordan. Cannonier is also a former Alaska Fighting Championships Heavyweight Champion, defeating Tony Lopez at AFC 104 to claim the championship.
