Although the Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin rematch is already good enough for potentially millions of fans to buy the September 15 pay-per-view, the full card could be one of the biggest of the year.
According to ESPN?s Dan Rafael, a number of fights are being considered for the pay-per-view card, including another world title fight featuring WBO 154-pound champion Jaime Munguia. Munguia, the 21-year-old sensation, has already fought four times in 2018 with two of those fights already being world title fights.
Munguia is coming off his first title defense against Liam Smith on July 21. Munguia won that fight by unanimous decision about two months after Munguia first won the title when he easily and quickly dispatched former champion Sadam Ali. Since the fight against Smith was a mandatory challenge, Munguia?s next fight, whether or not it takes place on the September 15 pay-per-view, will be a voluntary defense.
Another fight being considered is a middleweight matchup between Golden Boy Promotions stablemates David Lemieux and Gary ?Spike? O?Sullivan. The two sides had been feuding on social media as of late and they have been previously rumored to be fighting on September 15.
One other fighter that is currently being planned to fight on September 15 is former pound-for-pound king Roman ?Chocolatito? Gonzalez. Gonzalez, who has not fought since last September, was originally scheduled to fight on the May 5 HBO card, first the planned rematch between Alvarez and Golovkin, and then Golovkin vs. Vanes Martirosyan after Alvarez withdrew from the fight. The reason why Gonzalez did not fight on May 5 was due to visa issues, leaving him unable to travel to the United States in time for May 5, but those issues have since then been settled.
The rematch between Alvarez and Golovkin, for Golovkin?s WBA ?super? and WBC middleweight titles, is currently set to headline the September 15 pay-per-view from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, the site of their first encounter which ended in a draw.
