Rey Vargas To Defend Super Bantamweight Title On August HBO Card

Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions and HBO will not submit to the Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor fight on August 26, adding a second world title fight to their televised card on that same day.

The August 26 HBO card, which will feature Miguel Cotto's return to action against Yoshihiro Kamegai for the vacant WBO light middleweight title, will also have WBC super bantamweight champion Rey Vargas defend his title against Ronny Rios.

De La Hoya made the announcement and gave a slight jab towards the Mayweather vs. McGregor fight, calling his card one with "real fights, for real world championships."

"People who want to see real fights, for real world championships, are in for a real treat on August 26th," De La Hoya said. "For the last many summers, StubHub Center has played host to the highest action fights in our sport. That tradition will continue at the end of August."

Vargas will be making his first defense of the title since winning it back in February, winning a majority decision over Gavin McDonnell. The undefeated 26-year-old champion is fighting at the StubHub Center in California for the second time in his career, just more than four years after his first fight there, a second-round knockout win over former world title challenger Juanito Rubillar.

Rios, a former NABF and WBC Silver featherweight champion, has won his last five fights since suffering his only pro loss to Robinson Castellanos, who's challenging for WBA "super" world super featherweight title on July 15, back in 2014.
