Rio Olympic Games Boxing: Day 12 Results

Kazakhstan continues to dominate in these Olympics. On this day, Kazakhstan wins another medal, this time coming from the men's welterweight division. Daniyar Yeleussinov is your gold medalist after defeating Shakhram Giyasov of Uzbekistan with a dominant decision victory. This makes it four consecutive gold medals in the welterweight division for Kazakhstan, all by different fighters, something that has never happened before. The only other time there has been a country to win four straight gold medal in the same weight class, it was Cuba’s heavyweights from 1992-2004, with Félix Savón winning three of them and Odlanier Solis the final in Athens.

This day was also the day of upsets in the flyweight division. Three victors today are considered upsets (Shakhobidin Zoirov, Yoel Finol and Jianguan Hu), especially with Zoirov defeating the number one seed Elvin Mamishzada. Fortunately, it was pretty much a controversy free day in the Olympics, which feels like a breath of fresh air.
