Robert Whittaker Says UFC Shouldn’t Give Title Shots To Those Who Miss Weight

UFC Middleweight Champion Robert Whittaker and Kelvin Gastelum are the coaches for the upcoming season of the UFC Ultimate Fighter.

The title holder believes that no championship bouts should be given to competitors who miss weight in previous bouts.

“It’s like me going down to bantamweight, not making weight, winning because I’m much bigger and then getting a title shot,” said Whittaker at a TUF 28 media lunch. “It’s not fair. It’s not fair. Because on the flip side, the guys that are making weight don’t make it easy. It wasn’t easy to cut weight and make weight and do the job. We still had to struggle, we still had to diet weeks out. We’re just more professional at it. We just did it right.”

Whittaker recently fought Yoel Romero in the main event of UFC 225, a bout that Romero had missed weight for.

While Whittaker says fighters who miss weight should get more severe punishments, one thing the champion doesn’t know is exactly what that penalty should be.

“It’s a very funny topic, missing weight and getting title shots,” Whittaker said. “I think the punishments should be more severe, but I don’t know.”

UFC Ultimate Fighter 28 premiers this Wednesday Night on Fox Sports 1, with the finale taking place in November.
