Robert Whittaker Scores Big Upset Over Jacare Souza At UFC Kansas City (With Video)

Being ranked #6, you'd think that not many wins would be a huge upset for middleweight Robert Whittaker.

At Saturday's UFC Kansas City show on Fox, the New Zealander vanquished top middleweight contender Jacare Souza with a violent finish in the second round. The finish came following a series of combinations, which included a big head kick and follow-up strikes on the ground.

Round Two: The round begins with Whittaker peppering Souza with a series of jabs, Whittaker drops Souza with a right and he allows him to stand up. Souza starts hunting for the takedown against Whittaker, Whittaker then cracks Souza with an uppercut. Whittaker follows that up by cracking Souza with a head kick, Whittaker then pops Souza with a left as well. Whittaker continues to just swing away against Souza, Whittaker catches Souza with a front kick followed by a head kick. Whittaker drops Souza with a combination and he pounces on him with strikes until the referee jumps in.

Official Result: #6 Robert Whittaker def. #3 Ronaldo Souza by TKO via strikes (3:28, R2)

The fight ended a hot streak for Souza, which saw him win ten of 11 fights. His only loss before Saturday during the streak came in controversial fashion to Yoel Romero in 2015.

The 26-year old Whittaker won his seventh straight fight, and moved to 6-0 in the middleweight division. He's likely to launch well into the top-5 if not the top-3 in the division.
