Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez Suffers First Pro Loss

Roman Gonzalez’s claim as the top pound-for-pound boxer is now moot point now that he is no longer a world champion.

In his first defense of his WBC super flyweight championship, the man named “Chocolatito” lost his title, and his perfect boxing record, to Srisaket Sor Rungvisai of Thailand via majority decision (113-113, 114-113, 114-113). Fightful had Gonzalez winning the fight 116-110.

Gonzalez thought he won the fight and wants another shot at his title.

“I’m a little dinged up,” Gonzalez said. “I thought I won the fight. I want an immediate rematch. I want to get my title back.”

The story of the fight had been Gonzalez’s face getting headbutted by Sor Rungvisai numerous times throughout the fight and Gonzalez had a big cut near his right eye. Blood had poured all over his face as the fight progressed and the headbutts kept coming.

Although most of the headbutts were deemed accidental, the referee eventually took a point off Sor Rungvisai, who knocked Gonzalez down in the very first round of the bout.

Gonzalez was in the works of a potential rematch against Carlos Cuadras, who Gonzalez defeated last year to win the WBC belt. Cuadras held his end of the bargain by narrowing defeating David Carmona via unanimous decision in the fight prior to Gonzalez’s bout in the Gennady Golovkin vs. Daniel Jacobs pay-per-view from Madison Square Garden in New York City.
